It’s Movember, the month formerly known as November, now dedicated to growing moustaches and raising awareness and funds for men’s health; specifically prostate and testicular cancer. I’m donating my top lip to the cause for 30 days in an effort to help change the face of men’s health. My Mo will spark conversations, and no doubt generate some laughs; all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds for cancer’s affecting men.
Why am I concerned about men’s health?
*1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
*This year 37,000 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed

Ok, so you’re a household name. A big brand like… Let’s say ‘Electrolux’.
Being so successful, you will probably want to guard and protect the brand image you’ve built up over the years. God knows it’s cost enough to get to where you are.
Then, some student comes up with an idea so awful and badly thought out they should never have been let onto a design course in the first place. But hey, they can use a rendering package so rather than just sketch it out and then disregard it, they build up a model in 3D cad, render it up so it looks like a real product and before plastering it all over the internet, they put your brand on it! (check it out!)
If you were a company passing off your goods as someone else’s, you would be going from concept to courtroom faster than you could say infringement.
But for some reason it’s ok to do this if you’re a student. What’s more, the tutors don’t seem to mind.
Maybe in the past it was considered unimportant as the concept rarely got past the students degree shows. These days however with the power of the internet, the concept can be broadcast globally. Who’s to say that people don’t realise it’s just a concept or that it actually has nothing to do with the brand. Bad design made to look like real products confuses the customer base. People associate these concepts with the brand. Unless these companies nip this in the bud, they may get a few shocks.
It’s been a little while since last updating the blog. Lots of things have been going on here at Radius from taking on new staff through to some really exciting new projects. Growth is such a distraction!
I guess that’s an excuse for neglecting the blog a bit – It does tend to go on the back burner when we’ve got our hands full – (which is exactly how it should be I think!)
One thing that we are very grateful for is when existing customers recommend us to their contacts. Over the last month, we’ve had two such recommendations which is great and shows we must be doing things right! It’s also a very economical way of reaching new customers.
It’s been good to get continuing business through our existing customers too of course.
In the current economic climate, I think it’s very comforting to see companies developing new products which really proves the point of how design can help companies to keep their competitive advantage.
Of course, this is nothing new but I think it’s accentuated when times are more difficult and shows the value of good product design.
Another thing we’ve noticed recently is more customers coming to us for manufacturing advice. Choosing the right partner for manufacture as well as important decisions such as the right material choices and processes can save many tens of thousands through the life cycle of a project. It’s great to see companies large and small focussing on this side of things. I think it’s one of the key factors that will keep Britain competitive and ensure growth is sustainable.
I’m looking forward to updating the site with a few new projects soon – at the moment these projects are still in the pre-launch phase and therefore under strict confidentiality but all will be revealed in the coming weeks.
It’s been a pretty busy time for us over the last month or so, taking on quite a few new clients and also finding that some existing clients are coming back with lots more projects. – I thought this was meant to be a recession!
Anyway, we’ve taken on another product designer to help us deal with the workload. It’s great to be so busy and we’ve some really exciting projects right now in all kinds of sectors.
Jenny is an experienced product designer, having worked both freelance and also in a small consultancy previously. We’re looking forward to expanding the team further a bit later on in the year too.
We’ve designed a radical water management solution that is to be rolled out across the Kuwaiti water distribution network – and potentially across the whole of the Middle East.
Many countries in the region rely on water tankers to deliver drinking water on a commercial ‘paid for’ basis. The tankers are filled using old-fashioned hand-operated valves in Kuwait’s water filling stations.
Aquaflow filling units incorporate smart card technology to deliver large volumes of water, deduct payment at source and replace the hand-operated valves. Easy to install and simple to operate, the unique units are the heart of the Aquaflow system.
Designed by Radius Creative for client Weststone, the low voltage, low maintenance dispensing system operates in extreme conditions, helps prevent fraud (the smart card security code has 16 million combinations and usage is recorded for up to 12 months), and eliminates waste by dispensing water to an accuracy of less than 0.5 per cent.
The units also provide security for the tanker operators, who make cash-free payments for a preset quantity of water, while providing a cost-effective method for revenue-collection.
The Aquaflow technology includes a flow sensor, solenoid valve and removable electronics pack containing a card reader, circuit board, keypad, LCD display, stop/start switches etc, all housed in a sealed case manufactured from aircraft-grade aluminium. The electronics incorporate components manufactured to military specifications to ensure reliability.
Installation of the first Aquaflow filling units has now commenced.
